Social, Psychological, Familial and Economic Pressures and Their Relationship to Academic Achievement amongst a Sample of Students with Hearing Disability Attending Several Special Education Centers in Tripoli

Abstract

The social, psychological, economic and familial pressures have a significant impact on the academic achievement of our children with hearing disabilities and their families. That is why a number of researchers set off to set many studies shedding light on this side. This study is one them. It aims to verify the amount of social, psychological, economic and familial pressures placed on the students with hearing disability and impairment in the educational institutions and special education centers. It aims as well to identify the relationship between those pressures and the academic achievement regarding the students targeted, and reveal differences of statistically significance if ever in terms of sex variable. A sample of 49 students of both sexes selected; a questionnaire used as a scientific tool to achieve the goals set; the correlative comparative method used; along with a number of statistical methods like Mean, standard deviation, percentile, weighted average, Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach’s Alpha, split-half reliability and T-test. The following results were obtained:

  • There is a significant amount of pressures.
  • There are statistically significant differences between the pressures and the academic achievement.
  • There is a negative correlation between the pressures and the academic achievement.
  • The researcher recommended focusing on this group and providing all sorts of material and moral support, and securing all means to find solutions to the problems the face at all levels be it social, psychological, economic and familial.
